The healing properties of the delicate, mauve-flowered Marshmallow herb were first recorded in the ninth century BC and were used extensively in ancient Greek medicine.
Marshmallow is soothing, moistening and calming. Marshmallow has a high content of mucilagenous polysaccharides, which form a protective gel, along with flavonoids and anthocyanidins, which are potent antioxidants.
Marshmallow also contains B-sitosterol and lanosterol, which are similar in the properties to cholesterol. Cholesterol is a vital component of the skin barrier and as we age we require more cholesterol in our skin to protect the skin barrier.
Marshmallow is antibacterial, especially against the Bacillus species which are prevalent with acne rosacea. Marshmallow also has skin whitening properties. It inhibits the expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1), which plays an important role during the induction of pigmentation. It works by suppressing calcium mobilisation within the cell.
