The depth of chemical peels and the amount of skin cells removed depends on the type of acid that is used, percentage and the pH. They can remove cells that are still living which creates an inflammatory reaction in the skin. This can cause long term sensitivity and irritation in the skin.
Enzymes are much more beneficial. They do not remove cells that are living and gently encourage natural exfoliation. Some enzymes like Bromelain are known to be anti-inflammatory which is known to be of benefit for the skin, especially for acne. They are especially suited for very sensitive skins.
Enzymes and acids are not compatible in the same formula. Enzymes require a more neutral pH to be effective whereas acids require an acidic pH.
