Have you heard of the benefits of Pomegranate Extract?

Well pomegranates are rich in substances known as antioxidants and polyphenols. Some of these polyphenols include catcechin, ellagitannins, quercertin, chrysin and kaempferol.

Pomegranate and Ageing – It has been shown to increase the expression of procollagen-1 by dermal fibroblasts and inhibits MMP-1 by 85%. MMP-1 s responsible for degradation of collagen in the skin. Pomegranate has been shown to double the amount of hydroxyproline. Hydroxyproline is an amino acid involved in collagen and is indicative of collagen synthesis. Pomegranate is also anti-Glycation and inhibits advanced Glycation end products by 28%

Pomegranate and Wound Healing – It has also been shown to accelerate wound healing. Pomegranate extract studies have shown that complete healing of wounds occurred in only 10 days versus 18 days for the control.

Pomegranate and Acne – Pomegranate has been found to be a potent inhibitor of P.acnes, the bacteria associated with the formation of acne. And it requires such a low concentration to do this….only 15.6 µg per litre. That is less than 0.1 % that is required.

Pomegranate and Inflammation – It is also a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy active, exerting its effect on the NFK-β pathway (pathway involved in acne). It also inhibits NO (Nitrous Oxide) which accounts for part of its skin lightening properties. It is also a potent free radical scavenger.

If you suffer from dark under eye circles than Pomegranate also has benefit as it contains Chrysin, a flavonoid that eliminates bilirubin resulting in a lighter under eye area. Pomegranate also has photo protective (sun protective) effects against both UVA and UVB. At a range of 5-60 mg/L it protects the skins fibroblasts from cell death following UV exposure.

Pomegranate and Pigmentation – Pomegranate has been shown to inhibit tyrosinase by 43%. Tyrosinase is an enzyme responsible for the formation of pigment in your skin.

So where is this treasure found in products? It is found in our Roccoco Botanicals Pomegranate Eye Balm and our Dermalift Facial Treatment.
