There is one thing for sure and that is, what we eat definitely affects our skin. This particularly applies to acne skins.

So how does the gut affect our skin?

It affects the development of keratinocytes (newborn skin cells). If you have gut issues occurring they don’t develop properly and as a consequence the acid mantle or protective outer barrier of skin is not formed properly.

The gut is also the hub of immunity for our body. Poor diet leads to immunity issues and less protection from infection.

In the case of an acne diet, poor immunity in the skin can increase sebum (oil) and increase the amount of hyper proliferation occurring. Acne skins already have an overproduction of skin cells, but diet can cause that to increase even further.
So if you fix your diet does this mean skin issues disappear?

The answer is no. Some conditions are genetic and diet doesn’t always correct it. Also the quickest way to treat skin is topically. It has been shown that essential fatty acids are far more effective applied topically then if they are consumed.

In the case of acne, diet can decrease acne by 50%, but if you suffer from true genetic acne, you will still continue to breakout which is why managing your skin topically as well as managing your diet is vital.
